7 year itch song2/28/2024 But when you need the sound of evil laughter, a sneeze, a gulp, plop, fizz or a goofy gimmick explosion, this is your disc. This is a strange little album – with no theme, no plot and little musicality – that will be totally useless to almost everyone. VARIOUS CARTOON CHARACTERS “Crash! Bang! Boom! The Best of Warner Brothers’ Sound FX” ( ) Kid Rhino Records Winans has an amazingly soothing voice, he is a master of the soul sound, but it would benefit from a little more edge that he could incorporate with more diversity in his song selection. On the album’s 13-tracks the goodness ventures to greatness when BeBe gets a little help from his pal Stevie Wonder on the upbeat X-ian hummer “Jesus Children of America” – a sure winner in up coming Dove Awards. Grammy grabbing BeBe Winans take a break from his partnership with sister CeCe on today’s solo-soul release called “Love & Freedom.”Īlthough this album would be fantastic if BeBe injected a few more cc’s of funk, it is still very good in delivering a heaping of smooth-groove R&B. There are so many great tracks here it’s difficult to single out one performance as the best, but whenever this disc spins somehow Super Cat’s rendition of “Boops” is one that always seems to be the one that grabs the spotlight. If all you know of reggae is Bob Marley and his spinoff Wailers this disc will be a revelation. In what is touted as the “ultimate collection of dance hall reggae” VP records has assembled an impressive double-disc compilation that covers its bases nicely with featured performances by the genre’s rulers including Shabba Ranks, Shaggy, Buju Banton, Bennie Man and, of course, Yellowman to name a few. There’s little to get worked up about – the songs are mostly mid-tempo slow burn ballads that can either soothe the soul or cause yawns. This ain’t for headbangers, but adults who are sick and tired of saccharin pop and adult contemporary mush will find refuge in this collection.ĬLEOPATRA “Steppin’ Out” ( ) Maverick Recordsīritish teenage sister act Cleopatra takes a second stab at the big time with a standard-issue pop/R&B disc that isn’t bad, but sounds too much like everything else in the genre, including Mary J. They are also good enough to attract like-minded performers such as Waits, Elvis Costello, Brian Setzer, Rickie Lee Jones and Bette Midler, all of whom make guest appearances. The tunes are campy yet crisp, weirdly wonderful and totally retro. Hicks’ sax/drums/piano rendition is downright surreal. The best of the disc is Hicks’ cover of Tom Waits’ “The Piano Has Been Drinking,” a children’s song for adults. Melodies are rendered with masterful acoustic instrumentation that’s more old-time country swing than rock.Īs usual, Hicks lets the wacky be his guide when it comes to songwriting. With his down-home, deadpan delivery, the songs all carry an ironic edge that’s refreshing in a world of candy-wrapped boy-band pop. On his first album in nearly seven years, Dan Hicks offers more reports from the brink of disaster. DAN HICKS AND THE HOT LICKS “Beatin’ the Heat” ( ) Surfdog Records
